Community group unites against bullying

SACO – Many school children in Maine know all too well that the hallways and classrooms they occupy each day are filled with taunts, insults and bullies. Deb Landry, a Saco resident, published author, and the Executive Director of Crossroads Youth Center is working to change that reality.

“It’s the number one problem in our schools,” Landry said. “It happens at all ages and at all levels.”

Landry and Crossroads is working to Raise Awareness of Bullying Prevention and to honor and support October as National Bullying Prevention month.

She and the group are the organizers for the upcoming “Unite Against Bullying, Walk, Run or Roll and family fun day.” The event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 6 on the Eastern Trail behind Thornton Academy.

The group will use the proceeds from the event (a two-mile walk, run, or roll) to create educational awareness programs for schools throughout the state.

Landry herself has been promoting the event and bringing awareness to this issue for several years and has spoken out at conferences, schools, and media outlets.

“It’s a huge problem in our society,” she said. “And it can affect anyone, at any age.”

You may register for the event by visiting the group’s website ( or register on the day of the event starting at 9 a.m.

More than 30 booths will be at the event and there will be representatives from service agencies, student groups, and public safety companies to meet and talk with people who may have been affected by bullying.

“We’ll also have face painting, games and story walks for children,” Landry said.

Landry and the people at Crossroads hope this inaugural event will grow and expand throughout the state.

“Bullying is repetitive, intentional and is one of the largest problems in out society,” Landry said. “We’re all working to change that.”
