Well, now it is official, at least here in Saco at Thornton Academy. Like many schools around the state, we began classes in earnest this past Thursday, August 30, when the entire student body wandered back to school from summer vacation
Today as I sit in my my empty and quiet room here at school, I’m thinking about the 110-120 new students who’ll soon occupy the seats in my class. I’m thinking about the lessons we’ll talk about during the first week and I’m thinking about my former students. I can’t help but wonder what they are doing as the summer draws to a close.
I am a teacher and it’s time for a new school year to begin.
If you’ve read any of my recent stories, you no doubt have seen me write about Mary’s Walk and the Kerrymen 5K road race. Both events are near and dear to me and in an important and significant way, they have helped a community and a number of families heal. What follows is one student’s […]

SACO – If there was every any doubt that summer was nearly over, that ended today. I spent the afternoon making sure my new teaching space is ready. I unpacked boxes of books, the desks were cleaned and set up, and I entered my lesson plans for the first week into my online classroom. This […]
SACO – Five days. It all starts again next week and I’m excited about the prospects for the new school year. Now, the hallways are quiet, the custodial staff is busy finishing last-minute projects and my colleagues are working to make sure their teaching spaces are ready for students. Yes, it happens every year, but […]
SACO – For this teacher and writer, the summer is almost officially over, but it certainly has been productive. check out my latest short stories and if you get a chance, drop me a note.
